This database is freely available to the general public via the Internet.

The Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) finds regions of similarity between biological or genomic sequences using a weighted algorithm. The program compares unknown DNA or protein sequences to known sequences already in the database and calculates the statistical significance of matches.  BLAST allows identification of genes and proteins common to multiple organisms.
