Description

As a component database of the Web of Science Core Collection covering over 16,000 journals, Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI) includes articles from all scientific and technical disciplines, including the medical sciences. It is one of our largest and highly multi-disciplinary databases available to our university. SCI indexes over 8,500 international journals in 150 disciplines. Many of the references include author-prepared abstracts, as well as links to the full-text of articles if available.

SCI, as its name implies, has one of the most comprehensive citation dataset available, allowing retrieving both cited papers from an article's reference list and new citing papers. This database is frequently used to calculate individual and departmental citation metrics including total number of citations and the h-index which are increasingly used in promotion and tenure dossiers.

Although SCI can be searched alone, typically it is useful to search all eight component databases of the Core Collection which include conference paper, book, emerging country, social science, arts and humanities citation indexes. We recommend that searchers strongly consider using the broader Web of Science that searches across all databases including the Core Collection on the platform. However, when doing citation analysis/tenure metrics, we recommend using only the Core Collection.
