Score Call Numbers in the Music Library: Chamber Music

How to read M call numbers, M call number browsing, class M outline, and guides for specific genres of music

Chamber Music - M5 Overview

  • Sonatas and other works for one instrument plus piano are classed by instrument. M5 is used for groups of three or more performers and for two dissimilar performers (like flute and violin).
  • Complete sets of parts are in the PARTS collection.
  • Performance parts that go with a work for piano+instruments should be requested behind the circulation desk. The score will be in the general collection.
  • In the general collection, the number after the dash in the third line (for composer) indicates the number of players. For example, M521 B39-3 is a work (by Beethoven) for three performers.
  • In PARTS collection, the number of performers appears after the class number. For example, M52-4 B39 is a work (by Beethoven) for four performers.
  • For works that include electronics, the number after the dash for number of performers does not include the electronics. For example, string quartet with electronics would be M52048-4. For percussion works, the number is for number of players, regardless of how many instruments.
  • Tips for using the outline below:
    • Strings: violin, viola, cello, double bass, etc.
    • Plucked strings: lute, guitar, mandolin, harp, etc.
    • Winds: woodwinds or brass: clarinet, oboe, saxophone, trombone, etc.
    • Percussion: multiple percussion, timpani, drum set, marimba, etc.
