Score Call Numbers in the Music Library: Denkmaler

How to read M call numbers, M call number browsing, class M outline, and guides for specific genres of music

What's a Denkmaler?

The German term Denkmäler refers to monuments of music. These are critical editions of works, generally organized according to region or country. Many volumes include scholarly introductions or editorial commentary. Some series have contents listed in the library catalog.

Tips:

  • In the UB Music Library, most are shelved in M01, and the Catalog will have "Reference Scores" as the location within the Music Library.
  • “Opera omnia” appears frequently in titles in this section. It is Latin for “complete works,” meaning the complete works of one composer. More prolific composers have their complete works sets shelved in M05 instead.
  • Titles in series that are part of A-R Editions' “Recent researches in the music of…” are shelved individually in the general collection.

M01 Class Outline

Numbers in brackets function as decimals. For example, M01[437] is between M01[43] and M01[44]. The Denkmaler are arranged by regional themes, with general collections at the beginning of the class.
