Score Call Numbers in the Music Library: Popular Music and Jazz

How to read M call numbers, M call number browsing, class M outline, and guides for specific genres of music

Songs

Popular songs with words are generally found in class M7. These include pop arrangements and vocal selections that frequently say "piano/vocal/guitar". Often these will have words on their own staff, a piano accompaniment, and chord symbols. Some will also include guitar chord diagrams.

Collections appear at the beginning of M7 and have A3 as the next line.

Instrumental Music

Lead sheets and transcriptions of jazz recordings are generally found in class M08. Miscellaneous collections are shelved first, with A3 as the next line. After that, scores are arranged by alphabetically by performer. Subject search for lead sheets.

Fake Books

A fake book, or fakebook, is a collection of musical lead sheets intended to help a performer quickly learn and perform new songs. Each song in a fake book contains the melody line, basic chords, and sometimes lyrics or guitar chord diagrams. Fake books all have call number M007 Aa. They are not in the general shelves; they have their own shelves near the Reference section. Fake books do not circulate. Subject search for fakebooks.
