Citation Management

EndNote

The University at Buffalo Libraries are providing EndNote™ citation management software to UB's academic community. The UB site license for EndNote™ is funded by the University at Buffalo Libraries, with partial support from the Technology Fee. For the latest import filters, connection files, and software updates, see the ISI EndNote website.

Importing PDFs

Importing PDFs: How to Obtain Citation Information from PDFs Already on Your Computer (adapted from UC Davis)

Remember, this only works if the necessary coding accompanies your PDFs. If the procedure fails, it’s because that coding and data is not there.

From the EndNote menu bar: Select FILE to import individual PDFs

OR

Select FOLDER for multiple PDFs stored in a folder (you’ll see a choice for FILE or FOLDER)

Then:

  1. IMPORT FOLDER: Enter the folder location or use the CHOOSE button to navigate to it
  2. IMPORT OPTION: PDF
  3. Click IMPORT button (you’ll be ready to click once you’ve selected an option)

If the PDFs contain the required coding (DOI with metadata) EndNote will import them. If the PDF moves over but not the descriptive information (author, title, etc.) you’ll have to enter it from the PDF. You’ll have access to the PDF in the PDF viewer within EndNote.

EndNote and WorldCat Discovery

To move citations from WorldCat Discovery to EndNote – one at a time -- this is helpful guide.

Good as far as it goes, but you are not restricted to loading citations one at a time. Instead, conduct a search. Open your EndNote Library. Then, beside each citation, in the little box on the right that looks like a list, click on the plus. The plus will change to a minus (or a list item awaiting insertion). After working through all of the citations on the page, then go to the top of the screen and select My List. A screen will appear with the items you’ve marked. Then click the box with a right pointing arrow above or below the list. Then select Cite Record, then Cite with EndNote and the items will be sent to EndNote. Having said all this, occasionally my computer gets hung up at this stage – don’t rush.

Zotero

  • Zotero. Free citation management software. Not supported or generally taught by Libraries' staff; but popular with many users.

The Standard Citation Manuals

Advanced users may find Elizabeth Shown Mills' Evidence Explained: Citing History Sources from Artifacts to Cyberspace (3rd edition, 2015) useful.
