Summer and Post-Graduation Access to Lexis and Westlaw: Summer & Post-Grad Policies

This guide provides summer and post-graduate access policies for Lexis and Westlaw. These resources are available only to currently enrolled law students and recent graduates according to the terms below.

Vendor Policies for Summer 2024


Summer Access for Returning Students:
Your Lexis ID stays on automatically (no need to register, can be used for any purpose during summer—work or academic use—for unlimited hours).

Policy on the use of LexisNexis legal education educational IDs states:
"Summer Access is available to all law students once classes end for the semester/academic year, for the summer months of May-August.  [D]uring this period the permissible uses of [students'] LexisNexis law school educational ID are expanded to include use at any law firm, government agency, court or other legal position, internship, externship or clerkship...."

Graduating Students:
Your Lexis ID stays on automatically through 12/31/2024; use for any purpose:

  • studying for the bar
  • working
  • sharpening skills
  • researching employers

Note: graduating students must spend their Lexis points by 6/30/24; Starting 7/1/24, any graduating student who has verifiable employment with a non-profit organization can apply via the Lexis ASPIRE program for 12 months of free Lexis access. Students can visit for details on either of these offers.

Westlaw Edge

Summer Access for Returning Students:
You can use Thomson Reuters products, including Westlaw and Practical Law, over the summer for non-commercial research. You can turn to these resources to gain understanding and build confidence in your research skills, but you cannot use them in situations where you are billing a client. Examples of permissible uses for your academic password include the following:

  • Summer coursework
  • Research assistant assignments
  • Law Review or Journal research
  • Moot Court research
  • Non-Profit work
  • Clinical work
  • Externship sponsored by the school

Graduating Students
Westlaw Grad Elite Details

Graduates have access to Thomson Reuters products, including Westlaw and Practical Law, for six-months after graduation. Your “ Grad Elite” access gives you 60-hours of usage on these products per month to gain understanding and build confidence in your research skills. While you cannot use it in situations where you are billing a client, Thomson Reuters encourages you to use these tools to build your knowledge of the law and prepare for your bar exam.

IMPORTANT: SIGN OUT of Westlaw when research is complete in order to make the best use of the 60-hour per month allotment. DO NOT simply close the browser, because it can take up to 90 minutes to be signed off automatically. There is NO way to extend the 60-hour limit.
