What is the Certification Exam?

A degree from an accredited nuclear medicine technology educational program is required to become a Nuclear Medicine Technologist (NMT) in the United States. Upon degree completion, technologists can pursue professional certification programs to enter and advance in the profession. The Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) and The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) create and maintain examinations in nuclear medicine. Certification is required by some employers to hire NMTs.

NMTCB offers certification exams for the following:

  • CNMT - Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist Certification
  • NMTCB(CT) – Computed Tomography Certification
  • NMTCB(RS) – Radiation Safety Certification
  • NCT – Nuclear Cardiology Technologist Certification
  • PET – Positron Emission Technology Certification
  • NMAA – Nuclear Medicine Advanced Associate Certification

ARRT offers 15 credentials, including:

  • Nuclear Medicine Technology
  • Computed Tomography
