Fulbright Programs for U.S. Scholars

Availability: Programs are country- and discipline-specific; each has own requirements; U.S. citizens only with Ph.D or equivalent professional/terminal degree.

American Academy in Berlin
- American Academy in BerlinDescription: To "enrich transatlantic dialogue in the arts, humanities, and public policy through the development and communication of projects of the highest scholarly merit.”
Availability: Emerging and established scholars in humanities, social sciences and arts
Duration: Usually 1 semester. About two dozen awarded annually.
Amount: Airfare, partial board, $5,000 per month, and accommodations.

Humboldt Research Fellowship for Experienced Researchers (Germany)
- Humboldt Research Fellowship for Experienced Researchers in GermanyDescription: "A Humboldt Research Fellowship for experienced researchers allows you to carry out long-term research (6-18 months) in Germany. Applicants choose their own topic of research and their academic host. The fellowship is flexible and can be divided up into as many as three stays within three years."
Availability: "Submit an application if you are a researcher from abroad with above average qualifications, completed your doctorate less than twelve years ago, already have your own research profile and are working at least at the level of Assistant Professor or Junior Research Group Leader or have a record of several years of independent academic work."
Duration: Six to eighteen months
Amount: 2,650 EUR per month

DAAD Research Stays (Germany)
- DAAD Research Stays in GermanyDescription: "DAAD offers grants for one to three months in all academic disciplines to scholars at US and Canadian institutions of higher education to pursue research at universities, libraries, archives, institutes or laboratories in Germany. The aim of this particular program is to support short-term research stays and thus promote the exchange of experience and networking amongst colleagues."
Availability: "Scholars at US or Canadian universities or research institutions who hold the Ph.D. (or equivalent) and have been working in research or teaching full time for at least two years at the time of application and after receipt of the doctorate are eligible."
Duration: One to three months
Amount: "Monthly payments of EUR 2,000 for lecturers and assistant professors and EUR 2,150 for associate professors and full professors."
Deadline: October 15, 2020 for research stays starting between April 1st and September 30th of the following year. There is a second deadline in May for research stays starting between October 1st and March 31st of the following year.
