Engineering Management Research: Citation Metrics
Tools for Citation-Based Analyses
- Journal Citation Reports (JCR)
JCR provides access to data that allows you to evaluate and compare scholarly journals using citation data drawn from over 11,000 scholarly and technical journals from more than 3,300 publishers. Provides a variety of impact and influence metrics, including the Journal Impact Factor and Eigenfactor®. Journals can be compared or analyzed separately. - Essential Science Indicators (ESI)
Compilation of science performance statistics and trends data derived from Web of Science Core Collection data. Ranks authors (though the fact that they do not disambiguate authors who have common last names, like Smith or Liu, etc., makes author analysis problematic), institutions, countries, and journals across 22 broad disciplines. Consists of a 10-year rolling file that is updated every two months, accumulating up to 11 years. Rankings and citation counts are re-calculated with each bimonthly update. Can be used to conduct analyses of the scientific literature. It is highly recommended that you watch the series of short videos on how to use ESI before using this tool for the first time.
- Web of Science
Web of Science is a multidisciplinary research database that provides references plus abstracts and links to selected full text for journal articles (from 1965-present) and other types of information. It incorporates citation data that allows you to identify highly cited papers as well as highly cited authors. Citation reports can be generated in Web of Science for groups of papers, institutions, topical areas, and individual researchers. The video below explains how to generate a citation report for an individual author using the Web of Science Core Collection.
- The SCImago Journal & Country Rank
Publicly available portal that includes journal and country scientific indicators developed from information contained in the Scopus®. These indicators can be used to assess and analyze scientific domains. Journals can be compared or analyzed separately. Country rankings may also be compared or analyzed separately. Journals can be grouped by subject area (27 major thematic areas), subject category (313 specific subject categories), or by country. Citation data is drawn from over 21,500 titles from more than 5,000 international publishers and country performance metrics from 239 countries worldwide.
