Refining Your Results with Filters: Home

What the filters (also known as facets) in OneSearch do and mean

Sort by

Search results can be sorted by:

  • Relevance - records that match search terms most prominently;
  • Date - Newest - works published most recently;
  • Date - Oldest - works published least recently;
  • Title - title or headline;
  • Author - author of work - note that not all works have authors.

Availability

Search results can be narrowed to include only:

  • Available online - materials immediately available full text online;
  • Peer-Reviewed Journals - journals, articles, and other materials that are indicated as peer reviewed
  • Open Access - freely available online materials of all kinds that are indicated as Open Access
  • Held by Library - materials within UB Libraries holdings, available both online or in one of UB's libraries. To determine whether an item is available on the shelf and can be checked out, open the record and view Get It, Location, and Item information. You will need to login to determine exact request options.

Content Type

You can filter your results to specific content types, such as articles, books, and videos. Filtering to Journals or Newspapers will lead to the full publications -- not individual articles. To filter to journal articles only, select Articles.
Newspaper Articles are not included in these search results - to find Newspaper Articles, select Newpapers search under Content Types.

Note that within Everything Search, the terms Content Type, Resource Type, and Material Type may be used interchangeably.

Some common content types include: archival materials, articles, audio, book chapters, books, collections, conference proceedings, databases, dissertations, images, journals, kits, manuscripts, maps, newspapers, other, realia, scores, text resources, videos, websites.

Some materials may have other attributes in addition to their content type; some examples include "review articles" within articles, "primary sources" within various content types, or materials that have been "retracted" from publication. These additional attributes are displayed within the Content Type filter and as informational or warning flags on individual records. The full list of attributes is available in the guide to CDI Document Attributes

If you have any questions about content types or attributes, please ask! We would be glad for the opportunity to improve our help documents.

Journal/Newspaper Title

You can filter results to content that appears within particular publications. Articles within particular Journal Titles will be found in Everything Search; newspaper articles within particular Newspaper Titles will be found only in Newspapers Search.

Journal and Newspaper titles can be browsed and searched via the Journals tab or BrowZine. Note that searching in the Journals tab will result in only the full titles of journals and newspapers -- articles must be searched in Everything or Newspapers or by DOI/PMID.

Publication Date

Filter your search results to materials published within a range of years. Enter a year "From" for earliest publication date or "To" for latest publication date or both -- leave "To" blank to include the present. After the years are entered, select Refine to apply the filter right away or select the check box and then Apply Filters.

Subject

Filter search results to materials that have been assigned a particular subject heading, article keyword, or other descriptor. The Subjects may include Library of Congress, MESH, or other authorized headings, as well as publisher or author assigned keywords.

You can also focus on Library of Congress or MESH subject headings via Browse Search.

Language

Filter results to materials in particular languages.

UB Libraries

Filter results to materials held within particular UB Libraries. To determine whether an item is available on the shelf and can be checked out, open the record and view Get It, Location, and Item information. You will need to login to determine exact request options.

Resource Sharing in this area means that the material is on loan to another library. Note that you may still be able to request the work via Delivery+ and that another copy may be available sooner than the loan date indicated on the specific item.

UB Location/Collection

Filter results to materials held within particular collections in particular UB Libraries, such as Abbott Library History of Medicine, Law Rare Books, or Lockwood Library Graphic Novels.

SUNY Campus

Filter results to materials held by different libraries in the SUNY system.

Collection/Database

Filter results to online materials held within specific subscribed collections, such as JSTOR, Gale, HeinOnline, EBSCO, etc.  Note: not all available collections may be represented in this area due to shared records and differences in vendor metadata. In addition, some databases are not available for in-depth indexing within Everything. To find the most results from any specific database, use the A-Z Database list and search directly in the individual interface.

Collection Spotlights

Materials that are featured in our librarian-curated Collection Spotlights can be identified with this filter.  To explore all titles within a collection, follow the Collection Path link or browse More from the Same Collection within an individual record, or go directly to the Collection Spotlights lobby.

Recently Added

Filter your results to records that were most recently added to the UB Libraries catalog or Everything Search, selecting:

  • New From Last Week;
  • New From Last Month;
  • New From Last 3 Months.

Note that this filter refers to the date at which records were added, which may not reflect the date at which the materials themselves were added nor the date of publication.  To filter to the date of publication, use the Publication Date filter, Sort by Date, or explore the UB Libraries New Additions list for both Print and Online publications.
