EndNote Basics: Using Google Docs and EndNote

Last Updated: Mar 22, 2024 3:23 PM

EndNote and Google Docs

EndNote 21 is the first version to integrate with Google Docs. There is not a "Cite While You Write" (CWYW) tool available for EndNote 20 or previous versions. Please ensure you are using EndNote 21 if you plan to use it in conjunction with Google Docs.

Please note that you must have a Google Account and an EndNote Online account to use the CWYW tool in Google Docs. If you need to create an online account with EndNote 21 click here.

Additional Information on Using the Google Docs Extension

Sharing Behavior:

  1. Multiple users can insert citations at the same time and the user can see the references added by other users but no way to track which references are cited by whom.

Important: When a user is editing or adding a citation and another user updates the document at the same time, the changes made by the first user in the citation are removed.

Manual Text Edits:

  1. Manual edits to the citations and bibliography are ignored, as it reverts to the original format every time citations are updated.

  2. If a user deletes/cuts a citation, and then undoes the action with CTRL-Z, the citation comes back.

Important: Copying citations and pasting them somewhere else in the document or cutting text and pasting it somewhere else in the document (where a full citation is inside, not just part of one) will break the involved citation, those will no longer be recognized by CWYW add-on, won't appear in the manage citations screen, and won't be formatted by the update citations process.

Note: Currently, Footnote Citation Styles are not available.
