General reference

  • Sadie, Stanley, ed. The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. New York: Grove's Dictionaries. 
    Reference ML 100 .N48 2000

    One of the most authoritative and well-respected reference works for musical topics. Contains detailed articles, bibliographies, and works-lists of composers.

  • Grove Music Online. Edited by L. Macy. 

    The online version of the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (access through UB; must be on campus or have a UBIT name and password).

  • Slonimsky, Nicolas, rev. The Concise Edition of Baker’s Biographical Dictionary of Musicians, 8th ed. New York: Schirmer Books, 1994. 
    Reference ML 105 .B161 1994

    Another classic reference source, this book includes many biographies of performers as well as composers. Although the entries are much briefer than those in Grove, Baker's includes some entries not included in Grove.

  • Scholarly journal articles online, accessible through the UB Libraries Databases with a valid library card:
    • RILM contains citations and/or abstracts to music-related articles and conference papers. In some cases it is possible to link directly to a full-text electronic version through the UB libraries.
    • Music Index includes citations for both scholarly and popular sources.
    • JSTOR includes full-text of scholarly articles in many disciples, including music.
