The Hayes Hall clock and Westminster chimes were the gift of Kate Robinson Butler. Installed in July 1928, the weight of the four bells that make up the Westminster chime totals 1.75 tons.

In May of 1969, the students who had gathered in Clark Gym to see Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention (above) were treated to a surprise performance by Simon and Garfunkel. The duo were passing through town, heard that Zappa was playing at UB and decided to pop in to visit. Their set was an impromptu opening act for Zappa and his band..

The Buffalo Nine

On August 7, 1968, Bruce Beyer publicly burned his draft card and then entered the Unitarian Universalist Church on Elmwood Avenue in Buffalo. Despite claiming sanctuary, he and eight supporters were arrested by federal agents and the Buffalo Police on August 19, 1968. Though Beyer was not a UB student, his trial and conviction in February 1969 would become a focal point for student protests at UB.
