This cartoon by Tom Toles (BA '73) accompanied an article in the Spectrum that investigated whether UB was using department based quotas when granting tenure to professors.  Pictured are caricatures of President Robert L. Ketter and Executive Vice President Albert Somit. 

Parking Crunch

In the fall of 1972, 22,000 cars were registered for parking permits by UB students, faculty and staff but only 5,000 spots were available on campus.

Ten Years with SUNY

September 1, 1972 marked the 10th anniversary of UB merging with the State University of New York.  In that time UB grew from just over 7,000 students to 23,141 students.  Pictured at center is UB Chancellor Clifford C. Furnas at the merger ceremony,  With the merger, the title of UB's chief executive officer changed from Chancellor to President.

Intramural Sports

International Fiesta

The International Fiesta took place on February 24, 1972.  It showcased songs, dances and other presentations by international UB students.  International Fiesta has become an annual tradition that still takes place today.

University Community Day

On May 6, 1973, an estimated 20,000 people visited UB for University Community Day.  The university's schools and departments planned over 100 attractions including a laser demonstration, a 500 pound concrete canoe and an outdoor symphony concert.  Over 1,300 people lined up for the shuttle to the new campus in Amherst and a tour of the newly completed O'Brian Hall.
