Great Lakes Essential Resources: Lighthouses
It is estimated there are over 200 active lighthouses on the Great Lakes. Some of these historic buildings are managed by the National Park Service such as the South Manitou Island lighthouse at Sleeping Bear Dunes on Lake Michigan. Others are maintained by local associations, like the Buffalo Lighthouse on Lake Erie. Even when lighthouses go dark, they still shine as a beacon of hope and a portal to history to many.
